Dans les années 80, le Renouveau Charismatique était très actif en Côte d’Ivoire, notamment à Abidjan, où les groupes de prière se multipliaient. Certains leaders ont alors ressenti le besoin d’une formation spirituelle pour mieux encadrer les participants. Sur recommandation de Sœur Agathe La Flèche, une religieuse des Filles de Ste Marie, le Père Laurent Fabre, Fondateur de la Communauté du Chemin Neuf, a été invité à prêcher deux retraites à Abidjan. Il est arrivé en août 1986, accompagné de François Xavier Getti, alors séminariste. Agathe La Flèche avait fait la connaissance du Père Laurent Fabre lors d’un séjour en France.
