C’était lors d’un fameux week-end en montagne avec un certain américain épiscopalien Marc Hofman, qui, plus tard, deviendra « brother Moses » dans la « Jesusbruderschaf t », communauté allemande luthérienne à vocation œcuménique. Hubertus Tommek, alors également Jésuite étudiant en théologie à Lyon, voyant Laurent transformé par cette expérience, désire vivre cette même démarche et exprime sa prière : « Jésus, jusque-là, tu m’as donné de l’eau gazeuse, aujourd’hui je te demande de me donner ton champagne ! ».
